 Xperia X10
In order to help you get the most out of the phone and to explore it to the limits of its performance, we’ve outlined below some of the key changes introduced in the latest software upgrade.
Essentially the upgrades improve four key aspects of the phone – general look, feel and stability; re-worked contact management; improvements to the camera; and the wealth of new applications available after the upgrade to Android 2.1.
Stability and the overall look and feel have been vastly improved through hundreds of minor tweaks. Some examples of this that you might want to pull out include:
 • The homepages: These have been extended to have five rows and four columns (so you can get more shortcuts and widgets per screen). There are also more of them, increasing from three to five.
 • The lock screen: When the phone is plugged in to charge it gives you a % indicator so you know when the phone is fully charged.
 • You can now mute the phone directly from the lock screen without unlocking and going into the settings menu.
 • Throughout the phone, text is displayed in a smaller font so you can read more without scrolling.
 • We’ve updated Timescape and Mediascape to improve their usability, including the addition of scrolling text to Timescape.

The way the phone manages contacts is vastly improved by the new social phonebook:
 • Try importing some contacts from another source, then syncing the phone with your Facebook account. It will automatically match up contacts with the same name between your phonebook and Facebook account, merging the information available and importing the contact’s profile picture.
 • Contacts also sync with your Google accounts: sync the phone (menu – settings – accounts & sync) and see how the real time presence indicators light up if your contact is online and available to chat.
 • Try putting a contact shortcut (press the menu button then select add) on your home screen and see the new contextual menu means that you will never be more than two clicks away from calling, texting or emailing them.
 • Occasionally syncing contacts with multiple services can create duplicates (e.g. if there are differences in way you spelled their name) to get rid of these, long press on one of the duplicates and select “join contacts” to merge the two.

The video camera now records in HD and includes a continuous autofocus mode. There are demo videos of this on the Sony Ericsson product blog: blogs.sonyericsson.com/products. Alternatively make your own by ensuring that you are in HD video mode (top left of the screen). Focus the camera on something far away, then move it to point at a much closer object. The autofocus will immediately adjust to keep the image crisp.
Finally, you can now access hundreds of new apps via Android Marketplace. Some great free ones that you might want to highlight include:
 • Dialer One – replaces the Android phone dialer with a great text based intelligent search alternative. Press the number key with the letter of your contact’s name and it will gradually filter your contacts / call log until you have found the right person. (Example: “Jess” would be “5377”).
 • Angry Birds – potentially the most addictive game on earth.
 • Twitter – Whilst there are a number of free and paid Twitter clients available for Android 1.6, if you want the official Twitter client, you need the upgrade.
